Highlights of the Class of 2010:  Three National Merit FINALISTS: Jessica Armer, Jon Meis, Erin Yoshida.  Three National Merit Commended Students: Eric Bateman, Grace Ann Lane and Rebecca Shelton

JUNIORS: Class of 2011---The PSAT/NMSQT was given to juniors on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 during the school day (7:45-11:30)  Test results were distributed before Christmas Break.

Students who take the PSAT this year will have free online access to My College Quickstart which gives you your Score Report (every test question with complete answer explanations), SAT Study Plan (personalized advice on how to do better on the SAT), College Matches (lists colleges in Washington that have your indicated major), My Major and Career Matches and MyRoad (ORA Personality Profiler, profiles of 450 occupations, college information, build a resume)  Your Score Report (PSAT test results) will contain a personal identification number (PIN) that you will use to access this personalized information at www.collegeboard.com/quickstart 

My College QuickStart is an easy-to-use, online, personalized college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who take the PSAT/NMSQT. The information and answers your child provided when they took the test are incorporated into this useful tool, and it presents their data back to them in four main parts:

• My Online Score Report- an enhanced score report that allows students to review each test question, the student’s answer, and the correct answer with answer explanations.

• My SAT Study Plan- a customized SAT study plan based on student PSAT/NMSQT test performance, highlighting skills for review and practice.

• My College Matches- A starter list of colleges based on the student’s state and indicated choice of major.

• My Major and Career Matches- Major and career matches that are compatible with the student’s general interests and personality type.

Access is available using the access code printed on the student’s paper score report, and the tool can be utilized throughout high school. Using My College QuickStart together with your child is a great way to introduce and guide your child through important aspects of the college-going process. Visit www.collegeboard.com\quickstart.  

Class of 2011 Register for the SAT I Reasoning Test online at http://www.collegeboard.com.  It is suggested that you get at least one sitting of the test behind you going into the summer months.  You will be taking the SAT I--Reasoning Test.  Cost: $45 

If you are applying to a highly selective university/college you will have to take the SAT II Subject tests.  Ask me or your college rep or look online for this information  www.collegeboard.com . 

Register for the ACT online at http://actstudent.org   Sign up for the writing test too.  Cost: $46

NEW! The College Board has two new tools (free) for students who have taken the SAT I Reasoning Test called My SAT Online Score Report (insights into your strengths and weaknesses, details your performance by question type and difficulty level, essay question and response, career and major searches) and SAT Skills Insight (shows skills you know and highlights ones you need to know better).

--Visit college campuses

--Be sure your senior year class schedule is rigorous

Tips for college life

  • Get housing information in early and visit the various dorms before making a decision
  • Invest in a planner and use it
  • Take advantage of Freshman outings/classes/special interest groups
  • Learn to do laundry
  • Talk to upper classmen about professors
  • Get to know your advisor/counselor and make regular visits
  • Join on-campus activities

Classes of 2010 and 2011 Tips for College Success

  1. Take academically challenging classes your junior and senior years

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) You can apply on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The completed form can be sent in AFTER January 1, 2010!! Hard copies are not available this year.  There is a cut-off date for FAFSA submission to each institution of higher learning so check it out with your intended school(s). The UW deadline is February 15, 2010; it needs to be to the federal processor by February 1st. FAFSA pin number: You and your parents will each need a PIN to sign your FAFSA form electronically if you do an on-line application.  To apply go to: www.pin.ed.gov

Community and Technical Colleges not only offer college transfer courses but also myriad technical and career programs. There are 24 such institutions of higher learning in the Puget Sound area. NCAA Eligibility Seniors: If you are thinking of playing Division I or II college sports, you can register on-line at http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ncaa/NCAA/common/index.html

The NACAC has set up an interactive and free college access tool that allows students and parents to chat live with colleges via the internet. Register at http://www.OnlineCollegeFair.com to view the schedule of chat dates.
